Answer engine

A search product that replies to a question directly and cites sources, instead of handing back a list of links to work through.

An answer engine is a search product that replies with a written answer instead of a page of blue links. It reads a question, pulls material from sources it trusts, then assembles a short response with citations underneath. Classic search ranks documents. An answer engine ranks sentences and facts, and the click is optional. The neighbours split by scope: AEO is the practice of getting picked for those answers, GEO covers the wider set of generative surfaces, and LLMO deals with how a brand is described inside a model's own output. AI SEO is the umbrella term over all of it. For a buyer, the test is whether a course names the engines it targets and shows how answers get assembled and measured, or whether it uses the phrase once and moves on. In this directory the AEO flag tracks that teaching: 19 of 44 programs teach it (12 unverified) (checked 18 September 2026). Read the syllabus for the measurement part. Being cited only helps if you can tell when it happened.

Example

Someone asks which soil suits blueberries. The engine returns a short paragraph about acidity and a note on testing first, with a few source links tucked underneath. A gardening site supplied the sulphur line, so it gets the citation and perhaps a visit. The person reading has their answer either way and may never click.
