# llms.txt

A plain text file at a site root that points language models at the pages you want read. Unproven, one part of crawler access.

By Editorial team. Definition in our words; usage count from the dataset (18 September 2026).

llms.txt is a proposed plain text file, written in Markdown, that a site publishes at its root to point large language models at the pages it wants read: a table of contents with links and a short note on each. It is a suggestion rather than a rule. robots.txt governs crawler permission and the major crawlers honour it; llms.txt has no confirmed support from any large AI provider, so treat it as an experiment. GEO and AEO describe content and entity work, while llms.txt is plumbing, one item inside the wider AI crawler access topic that also covers robots.txt rules for agents such as GPTBot and whether a CDN is quietly blocking them. For a course buyer the question is scope. A module that shows how to write the file and stops there takes an afternoon. A module that also shows how to confirm an AI agent can fetch and render the page is worth the fee. 20 of 44 programs teach it (9 unverified) (checked 18 September 2026)

## Example

A documentation team adds llms.txt at the site root. The file lists the install guide and the API reference with a line of context on each. Weeks later they read the server logs: the file was fetched a handful of times, while the sitemap was fetched constantly. Fixing a CDN rule that was refusing AI agents did far more for their citations than the file did.
