# AI Mode

Google's chat-style search tab, where one question fans out into many searches, and how it differs from AI Overviews.

By Editorial team. Definition in our words; usage count from the dataset (18 September 2026).

AI Mode is Google's chat-style search surface: a separate tab where a question gets a conversational answer assembled from several searches run in the background, with source links set alongside the text. It is not AI Overviews, which appear at the top of the ordinary results page. AI Mode is somewhere a user has to switch into, and it splits one question into many sub-queries before answering, so the pages it cites are often not the pages ranking for the phrase typed. For a course buyer, the question is whether the syllabus treats AI Mode as its own surface with its own measurement, or folds it into a general GEO module. Few providers say either way on the sales page: 10 of 44 programs (checked 18 September 2026) name it as a target engine, well behind the count that names ChatGPT. Ask what tracking method a course teaches for a surface that publishes no rank data.

## Example

A cookware retailer searches a buying question on the standard results page and finds its own guide cited in the AI Overview. Asked inside AI Mode, the same question returns a longer answer citing a forum thread and a review site, with the retailer absent. Nothing changed on the site. The surface split the question into sub-queries and pulled different sources.
